Hiawatha National Forest covering the eastern half of Michigan's Upper Peninsula — Lake Superior to Lake Michigan, including the Pictured Rocks lakeshore and the Tahquamenon-Two Hearted river systems. Northern hardwoods (sugar maple, yellow birch, beech) interlocking with conifer (white pine, white cedar, balsam fir, hemlock) and aspen-birch successional stands. Closes the gap left by the centroid of the existing "Upper Peninsula" region in the western UP. Yellow morels in aspen-birch flats late May; spring porcini (Boletus edulis var. clavipes) and king bolete in summer; chanterelles in hemlock-hardwood; lobster, matsutake, and hedgehog in conifer duff in fall.
