Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks on the Illinois River — sandstone canyons with oak-hickory uplands, maple and elm ravines, and floodplain woods. Spring morels in the river bottoms; chanterelles, black trumpets, chicken-of-the-woods and hen-of-the-woods through summer and fall. State park rules apply.
