5,000–9,700 ft · OR🚗 Directions
Steens Mountain in the high desert of southeastern Oregon — a 50-mile fault-block rising to 9,700 ft, with quaking aspen groves, mountain mahogany and western juniper on the long western slope and riparian cottonwood in the gorges. Morels and aspen associates follow snowmelt up the mountain from May into July; boletes and puffballs after summer thunderstorms. BLM land; the Loop Road opens in early summer.
