Striking purple to violet gills and stem when young, fading to brown. Strong floral smell. Common late-season fruiter that can push into December in mild climates. Must be cooked — raw blewits cause GI upset in some.

Look-Alikes
Species to rule out before picking. Each is tagged with its own edibility.
Cortinarius spp. (Purple Webcaps)
DeadlyDANGEROUS. Many Cortinarius are purple too; orellanine toxin is deadly. Cortinarius has rust-brown spores and a web-like cortina. Blewits have PINK spores, no cortina.
Laccaria amethystina (Amethyst Deceiver)
EdibleEdible but much smaller. Similar color.
Identification Tips
- ✓Spore print is PINK (blewit) vs RUST (Cortinarius) — this is non-negotiable
- ✓Cook fully — raw blewits cause tummy upset in some
- ✓Best flavor after the first frost, in the leaf litter fresh-sprouted
