Commonly Mistaken For

Species people confuse with this one — often the edible they were hunting for. Each is tagged with its own edibility; Bleeding Agaricus is the dangerous one.

Agaricus xanthodermus (Yellow Stainer)

Toxic

TOXIC. Stains YELLOW (not red) and smells of ink.

Other Agaricus

Toxic

Includes toxic species (A. xanthodermus, A. californicus, A. hondensis). Reject any with a phenolic or ink smell, or yellow staining at the stem base; always cook.

Identification Tips

✓Cut the stem base — red bleeding (not yellow) suggests this group
✓Smell should be mushroomy, not phenolic
✓Cook thoroughly; test-eat small portion first
