Commonly Mistaken For

Species people confuse with this one — often the edible they were hunting for. Each is tagged with its own edibility; Panther Cap is the dangerous one.

Amanita muscaria (Fly Agaric)

Toxic

Also toxic but typically less severely. Red-orange cap (not brown). Do not eat either.

Amanita rubescens (The Blusher)

Use caution

Edible when properly cooked — but blusher stains PINK when bruised. Panther cap does NOT bruise pink. Misidentification is occasionally fatal.

Identification Tips

✓Concentric rings of white warts on brown cap = panther cap
✓Do not attempt European-style preparation — toxin concentration varies wildly by collection
✓Ibotenic acid delirium can last 12-24h; severe cases cause seizures
