"Lion's mane's bigger cousin. Cascading tiered clusters instead of one pom-pom. Same crab-meat texture."
⚠️ Do Not Confuse With
Mushroom ID is a rule-out game. Every entry below describes a species that looks similar — learn the differences before you put one in a basket.
✓ Edible
Both edible. Lion's mane forms a single ROUND POM-POM with long icicle spines. Bear's tooth (Hericium americanum) forms BRANCHING CLUSTERS with shorter spines tiered like a frozen waterfall.
🌳 Host Trees & Plants
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.
Living Hardwood
Live tree parasitic
Saprobic substrate
Living hardwood trees attacked by parasitic/heart-rot fungi — tinder fungus, dryad’s saddle, bear’s head tooth.
Hardwood Forest
Fagaceae / Betulaceae (generic)
Saprobic substrate
Generic hardwood habitat — oak, maple, beech, birch, etc. Shown when the species is reported from hardwoods generally.
Branched Hericium with LONG hanging spines and a more robust structure than lion's mane. Mild seafood-like flavor. North American species — ranges from the Northeast to the Appalachians.
Habitat
Dead hardwoods (especially beech, oak, maple) across eastern North America. Fall.
Look for this on the ground
Beech leaf duff
Smooth tan-copper beech leaves, prickly beechnut husks, open beech-stand light.
