"Spring-fruiting pure-white Amanita. Same amatoxins as Death Cap. The spring trap for the unwary."
🌳 Host Trees & Plants
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.
Oak
Quercus spp.
Ectomycorrhizal · Forageable
Truffle / bolete / chanterelle host. Acorns edible after leaching.
Spring-fruiting cousin of the destroying angel. Pure white, ringed, sacked at the base, loaded with the same lethal amatoxins. Named for the "fools" who mistake it for a button mushroom or edible Amanita.
Habitat
Hardwood and mixed forests, especially under oaks, in spring through early summer — the off-season compared to destroying angel.
Look for this on the ground

Commonly Mistaken For
Species people confuse with this one — often the edible they were hunting for. Each is tagged with its own edibility; Fool's Mushroom is the dangerous one.
Agaricus arvensis (Horse Mushroom)
EdibleEdible. Horse mushrooms have pink-turning-brown gills and smell like anise. Fools mushroom gills stay WHITE.
Amanita bisporigera (Destroying Angel)
DeadlySame genus, same toxins, different season. Both lethal.
Identification Tips
- ✓All the same rules as destroying angel — white + ring + volva = do not eat
- ✓Spring is NOT a safe season for button-looking mushrooms
- ✓Always dig up the base to check for the volva
- ✓Call Poison Control if ingested — 1-800-222-1222
