Mushroom ID is a rule-out game. Every entry below describes a species that looks similar — learn the differences before you put one in a basket.
✓ Edible
Both are edible, but the half-free has a cap only attached HALFWAY down the stem (lift the cap skirt to check). Cook both thoroughly.
🌳 Host Trees & Plants
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.
Tulip Tree / Yellow Poplar
Liriodendron tulipifera
Saprobic substrate
Eastern hardwood; saprobic oyster + chicken-of-the-woods on standing dead.
Ash
Fraxinus americana
Saprobic substrate
Morel indicator (dying ash from EAB damage).
Morel with the cap attached to the stem only halfway down (the lower half of cap hangs free). Same honeycomb surface, same hollow interior. Less prized than true morels but still choice.
Habitat
Tulip poplar, ash, and mixed hardwood woodlands across eastern North America. Spring.

Look-Alikes
Species to rule out before picking. Each is tagged with its own edibility.
Verpa bohemica (Early Morel)
Use cautionEdible for most, GI distress for some. Cap hangs like a skirt and is free all around; stem is stuffed with cottony fibers (not hollow).
Gyromitra (False Morels)
DeadlyDEADLY. Brain-like cap, NOT honeycomb. Not hollow.
Identification Tips
- ✓Slice vertically: hollow from cap through stem = Morchella
- ✓Half-attached cap distinguishes from true morel (fully attached)
- ✓Cook thoroughly — raw morels cause GI upset
Field Notes
Ash, tulip poplar
