Wood-Chip Mulch
Hardwood mulch
Saprobic substrate
Landscape hardwood chip mulch — wine cap, bird’s nest fungi, dog-vomit slime mold. A great backyard cultivation substrate.
Large wine-red to burgundy cap fading to tan with age. Thick white stem with a conspicuous ridged ring. Very popular for home cultivation in hardwood-chip beds — one of the easiest outdoor mushrooms to grow.
Habitat
Wood-chip mulch, garden beds, and disturbed ground. Cultivated widely in backyard gardens. Spring through fall.

Look-Alikes
Species to rule out before picking. Each is tagged with its own edibility.
Stropharia spp.
Use cautionMost Strophariae are inedible/mildly toxic. Wine cap's distinctive ringed stem helps.
Young Amanitas
DeadlyAlways dig to check for a volva — wine caps have none.
Identification Tips
- ✓Cook and taste like potato — crumbles when pan-fried
- ✓Home cultivation: inoculate hardwood chips in spring, harvest for years
- ✓Slice to check for white flesh (not yellow stain)
