Look-Alikes
Species to rule out before picking. Each is tagged with its own edibility.
Clitocybe dealbata (Ivory Funnel)
ToxicTOXIC — contains muscarine (heavy sweating, salivation, slowed heart); rarely fatal. Also forms fairy rings on lawns. Ivory funnel has DECURRENT gills running down the stem; Marasmius has FREE gills. White (Clitocybe) vs tan (Marasmius) cap.
Panaeolus foenisecii (Lawn Mower's Mushroom)
Not dangerousNot edible; generally not psychoactive. Darker, mottled gills and a dark brown spore print.
Identification Tips
- ✓Wiry stems that won't snap — test: try to snap the stem; fairy ring champignon bends
- ✓Caps dry and rehydrate perfectly — string them and hang
- ✓Ivory funnel lookalike is the #1 danger — always check gill attachment
