"Can grow to basketball size in a week. Interior must be pure white — any yellow means it's gone over."
⚠️ Do Not Confuse With
1 lethal confusionMushroom ID is a rule-out game. Every entry below describes a species that looks similar — learn the differences before you put one in a basket.
☠️ Deadly
☠️ Lethal if confusedCut EVERY puffball in half before eating. Giant puffballs are PURE WHITE AND HOMOGENEOUS inside (no structure visible). If you see an OUTLINED CAP AND STEM inside, it's an Amanita button — drop it.
🌳 Host Trees & Plants
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.
Old Pasture / Meadow
Unimproved grassland
Saprobic substrate
Old pasture and unimproved meadow — waxcap indicator habitat, meadow mushroom, fairy ring champignon, giant puffball.
Enormous white puffball — a soccer-ball-sized specimen can weigh 10+ pounds. Edible only when interior is PURE WHITE (like a marshmallow). Once interior turns yellow or olive, it's past prime and must be discarded.
Habitat
Lawns, pastures, meadows, and field edges. Late summer through fall. Often in the same spot year after year.

Look-Alikes
Species to rule out before picking. Each is tagged with its own edibility.
Amanita eggs
DeadlyDEADLY. Young Amanitas emerge from a white "egg" that can be confused with small puffballs. Slice vertically — Amanita eggs show the embryonic mushroom inside with cap/stem/gills visible.
Earthballs (Scleroderma)
ToxicTOXIC. Earthballs have thick warty rind and dark purple-black interior; puffballs are pure white inside when young.
Identification Tips
- ✓ALWAYS slice vertically before eating — any sign of yellowing, outlines of cap/gills, or dark interior = discard
- ✓Smaller puffballs also edible, but slicing is still mandatory
- ✓Slice thick, pan-fry in butter like tofu
