Manicured grass
Saprobic substrate
Manicured turf and lawns — shaggy mane, green-gill lepiota, yellow-stainer. Check for herbicide use before eating anything from a lawn.
Large white parasol mushroom with brown scales and gills that turn GREEN at maturity. The most commonly eaten poisonous mushroom in North America — causes violent vomiting and diarrhea but rarely fatal. Adults and kids alike pick them from lawns.

Commonly Mistaken For
Species people confuse with this one — often the edible they were hunting for. Each is tagged with its own edibility; Green-Gill Lepiota is the dangerous one.
Macrolepiota procera (Parasol)
EdibleEDIBLE. Parasol has white gills that STAY WHITE at maturity, and a snakeskin-patterned stem. Green gill's gills turn olive-green; stem is plain white.
Chlorophyllum rhacodes (Shaggy Parasol)
Use cautionEdible for most but causes GI upset in some. Shaggy parasol's gills also stay white/pink.
Identification Tips
- ✓Wait for gills to mature — green gills at maturity = Chlorophyllum molybdites = toxic
- ✓Spore print test: green to olive = toxic; white = likely edible parasol
- ✓Symptoms appear 1-3h after eating: violent GI, usually self-resolves in 24h
