"Small white lawn mushroom with muscarine — causes sweating and drooling. Lookalike of fairy-ring."
🌳 Host Trees & Plants
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.
Lawn / Turf
Manicured grass
Saprobic substrate
Manicured turf and lawns — shaggy mane, green-gill lepiota, yellow-stainer. Check for herbicide use before eating anything from a lawn.
Small ivory-white to pinkish-buff mushroom with decurrent gills (running down the stem) often growing in fairy rings on lawns and grasslands. Contains high concentrations of muscarine — causes SLUDGE syndrome (salivation, lacrimation, urination, defecation, GI distress, emesis) and can be fatal.
Habitat
Lawns, meadows, and grassy edges — exactly where people look for "fairy ring" edibles. Summer through fall.
Look for this on the ground
Lawn and wood-chip edge
Manicured lawn meeting fresh hardwood mulch — suburban edge habitat.

Commonly Mistaken For
Species people confuse with this one — often the edible they were hunting for. Each is tagged with its own edibility; Ivory Funnel is the dangerous one.
Marasmius oreades (Fairy Ring Champignon)
EdibleEDIBLE and forms fairy rings in the same habitat — THE most dangerous lookalike pairing. Marasmius has free gills (not decurrent) and a tough, wiry stem that revives when rehydrated.
Hygrophorus spp. (Waxy Caps)
Use cautionMostly edible but better ID required.
Identification Tips
- ✓NEVER eat small white gilled mushrooms from lawns without a spore print AND gill check
- ✓Ivory funnel has DECURRENT gills; Marasmius has FREE gills
- ✓Muscarine symptoms: profuse sweating, tearing, drooling within 30-60 min of eating
- ✓Atropine is the antidote — get to an ER immediately
