⚠️ Do Not Confuse With
1 lethal confusionMushroom ID is a rule-out game. Every entry below describes a species that looks similar — learn the differences before you put one in a basket.
☠️ Deadly
☠️ Lethal if confusedBoth are small brown-capped mushrooms, but deadly galerina grows on WOOD with a distinctive ring on the stem and RUST-BROWN spores. Liberty caps grow in GRASS with no ring and PURPLE-BLACK spores. Substrate + spore color separate them.
🌳 Host Trees & Plants
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.
Old Pasture / Meadow
Unimproved grassland
Saprobic substrate
Old pasture and unimproved meadow — waxcap indicator habitat, meadow mushroom, fairy ring champignon, giant puffball.
Small brown conical-capped mushroom containing psilocybin. Found in grassy fields worldwide. Possession illegal in most US states. Research interest has grown (Johns Hopkins, MAPS) for depression and PTSD treatment under clinical supervision.
Habitat
Pastures, sheep-grazed grasslands, and lawns across cool temperate regions. Fall primarily.

Commonly Mistaken For
Species people confuse with this one — often the edible they were hunting for. Each is tagged with its own edibility; Liberty Cap is the dangerous one.
Galerina marginata (Deadly Galerina)
DeadlyDEADLY. Similar size and color; also on lawns/wood. Galerina does NOT bruise blue; Psilocybe does. Multiple fatalities from this misidentification.
Panaeolus spp.
PsychoactiveSome contain psilocybin, some don't. Expert ID required.
Identification Tips
- ✓Bruise test: Psilocybe stains blue when pressed or cut
- ✓Liberty cap is conical with a "nipple" at the apex
- ✓Legal status varies — do not pick in jurisdictions where possession is illegal
- ✓Deadly Galerina has been fatal to recreational foragers — confirm blue bruising
