Commonly Mistaken For
Species people confuse with this one — often the edible they were hunting for. Each is tagged with its own edibility; Yellow-Stainer is the dangerous one.
Agaricus campestris (Meadow Mushroom)
EdibleEDIBLE. Meadow mushrooms do NOT stain yellow and smell pleasant, mushroomy. Always cut the stem base and check.
Agaricus arvensis (Horse Mushroom)
EdibleEDIBLE with a mild anise smell. Yellow-stainer smells like ink.
Identification Tips
- ✓Cut the base of every Agaricus you pick — yellow stain = do not eat
- ✓Phenolic (ink/inky) smell = toxic
- ✓Some sensitive individuals have worse reactions than others
