"Edible, except with alcohol — then you'll be violently ill for hours. Was once used to 'cure' alcoholism."
⚠️ Do Not Confuse With
Mushroom ID is a rule-out game. Every entry below describes a species that looks similar — learn the differences before you put one in a basket.
✓ Edible
⚠️ Toxic if confusedAlcohol inkies have GRAY-BROWN smoother caps — any alcohol within 72 hours of eating causes intense nausea (coprine reaction). Shaggy manes have distinctly SHAGGY UPTURNED SCALES and are safe with alcohol. When young, both are white — ID when cap is still closed.
🌳 Host Trees & Plants
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.
Disturbed Ground
Edge / compacted soil
Saprobic substrate
Road edges, construction scars, trail sides, and compacted disturbed soil — orange peel fungus, alcohol inky, common edge colonizers.
Gray inky-cap mushroom that edible on its own but contains coprine — a disulfiram-like compound that causes violent reactions (flushing, nausea, racing heart) when combined with alcohol even days after eating.
Habitat
Grassy areas, gardens, and wood chips across temperate regions. Spring through fall.

Look-Alikes
Species to rule out before picking. Each is tagged with its own edibility.

EdibleEDIBLE and safe with alcohol. Shaggy mane has a conical, scaly, woolly white cap; alcohol inky is smoother and gray-brown.
Other Coprinopsis species
Use cautionSome are safe, some have coprine. Avoid all Coprinopsis with alcohol to be safe.
Identification Tips
- ✓Never consume alcohol for 3 DAYS after eating any inky cap — coprine persists
- ✓Reactions can include heart palpitations and hospitalization
