"Eat within hours of picking — they deliquesce into black ink overnight. A race against the clock."
⚠️ Do Not Confuse With
Mushroom ID is a rule-out game. Every entry below describes a species that looks similar — learn the differences before you put one in a basket.
⚠️ Toxic if confused
Alcohol inkies have GRAY-BROWN smoother caps — any alcohol within 72 hours of eating causes intense nausea (coprine reaction). Shaggy manes have distinctly SHAGGY UPTURNED SCALES and are safe with alcohol. When young, both are white — ID when cap is still closed.
⚠️ Toxic
⚠️ Toxic if confusedMagpie inkies have white patches on a DARK BLACK cap (Dalmatian pattern). Shaggy manes are UNIFORMLY PALE with shaggy upright scales. Magpie inkies are considered toxic.
🌳 Host Trees & Plants
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.
Lawn / Turf
Manicured grass
Saprobic substrate
Manicured turf and lawns — shaggy mane, green-gill lepiota, yellow-stainer. Check for herbicide use before eating anything from a lawn.
Disturbed Ground
Edge / compacted soil
Saprobic substrate
Road edges, construction scars, trail sides, and compacted disturbed soil — orange peel fungus, alcohol inky, common edge colonizers.
Tall cylindrical white mushroom with shaggy upward-curving scales. Deliquesces (auto-digests) into black inky liquid within hours of picking — so you must cook same day. Delicate, creamy flavor. Also called Lawyer's Wig.
Habitat
Lawns, disturbed ground, roadside gravel, gardens, wood-chip mulch across North America. Spring and fall after rain.

Look-Alikes
Species to rule out before picking. Each is tagged with its own edibility.
Coprinopsis atramentaria (Alcohol Inky)
Use cautionEdible but CANNOT be combined with alcohol. Gray-brown, not shaggy, smaller.
Coprinellus micaceus (Mica Cap)
